You’re probably aware of the negative impact of a clogged HVAC air filter. However, did you know that dirty HVAC registers can cause problems, too? From compromised air circulation to dust and particles in your living space, neglecting these components can lead to various issues. Join us at Clayton-Englewood Heating & Cooling as we discuss how to take care of your registers and show them a little TLC, ultimately improving your home’s comfort and harmony.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

When registers are overladen with dust and loose particles, the following things can take place:

  • COMPROMISED INDOOR AIR QUALITY – The IAQ in your home will be negatively affected. When this takes place, it can lead to eye and nose irritation, as well as cause serious issues for those with allergies or respiratory conditions. By regularly cleaning your HVAC registers as part of your routine, you create a healthier living environment for you and your family.
  • LESSENED SYSTEM EFFICIENCY – When registers accumulate dust particles and other loose debris, it can affect the efficiency of your HVAC system. This may result in your system working harder and longer than necessary.
  • RAISED ENERGY BILLS – Similarly, when a system runs continuously to keep up, it uses more energy, thus affecting your energy savings and potentially increasing your monthly expenses.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN HVAC REGISTERS?

Here is the step-by-step process for cleaning your registers:

  1. Gather all the necessary items: screwdriver (if needed to remove the register), vacuum with cleaning attachment, warm water, dish soap, and a soft rag or cloth.
  1. If possible, take out the registers for easier access (optional but recommended if they are extra dirty).
  1. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush or nozzle attachment to remove loose dust and debris from the registers. If the register is removed, you can also vacuum around the vent opening, avoiding vacuuming into the duct.
  1. Clean the registers themselves. If they are not too dirty, use a lightly moistened cloth with warm water and dish soap. Avoid using excessive water to prevent it from dripping into the ductwork (if the registers are not removed).
  1. For a deeper clean, soak the registers in warm water and dish soap for a few minutes, then rinse and wipe them down.
  1. Confirming the registers are completely dry before placing them back in place.

Proper care of your HVAC registers is essential for maintaining indoor air quality and creating a comfortable living space. Regularly cleaning them using the correct methods improves air circulation and enhances overall health. Don’t overlook this important task – start including it in your cleaning routine today for a healthier and cozy home atmosphere!
